I too am a recent conver to Dear Winesburg after hearing them on the SPL podcast. I have been obsessively listening to them on myspace, so thanks for the video links.

Can I recommend 6 Music? I've been listening for years and it never fails to deliver (apart from John Holmes).

Done well the preamble is an artform in itself (see Hugh McMillan - one of the best and not just for his humour). Done badly it is a sedative. So I say if you're good at it preamble away...and if you're not stick to pure poetry.

Hi Claire, and thanks for the mention.

I generally put my "numbered set" down to shear and utter laziness, and the fact I will over analyse constructing my set to the point of anxiety if I do it differently. Some people like it and others don't, it doesn't always work, but I think it is worth reaching out to the audience and seeing if they are willing to participate.

At the Hidden Door Festival I did something similar, but it wasn't a staged set. I basically walked around the main maze space and just stopped people and asked them if they would like to a hear a poem and then let them chose a number. The positive side of this was that because readings were to groups of, at the most, five and I was on the same level as them rather than above them on the stage my audience felt able to engage me in conversation, if they wanted to. Pre and post amble became less relevant as the poem was part of a larger conversation.

This kind of intimate reading worked really well and I am keen to try something similar again.
