Christmas gifts for poets: Edinburgh Vintage

Monday, December 5th, 2011

OK, I’ll admit: Edinburgh Vintage is not exactly the obvious choice when it comes to presents for writers. However, I am a writer and if you bought someone something from my shop this Christmas, it would be a lovely Christmas present for me! So you’ll have pleased at least one poet…

Edinburgh Vintage is my sometime online secondhand clothing business, which I’ve been running on and off for two years. It was born of a need to make some extra pennies as a temporary (read: impoverished) lecturer trying to juggle a whole load of unpaid creative projects (literary magazine, small press, community arts initiative, etc). Since, it’s become a handy way to keep my collection of second-hand clothing at a reasonably manageable size. I also find it loads of fun.

The super gorgeous tattooed goddess Martyna, modelling one of my favourite pieces currently for sale.

Etsy’s vintage shops seem to be all too often populated by two types of item: one, things that look exactly like the kind of stock you get at Urban Outfitters and two, vastly expensive genuine 1950s bespoke ballgowns that were each made for a woman with the measurements of a particularly skinny whippet (example). Edinburgh Vintage attempts to buck that trend by stocking clothes that a) aren’t obnoxiously hipsterish, b) you might actually wear out of doors and c) come in real sizes. I like certain clothing eras and styles: Mod, Skinhead, Ska, punk and anything 1960s, primarily. Mostly, that’s what you’ll find in my store.

A very pretty embroidered kimono, also modelled by the lovely Martyna.

As the Christmas shopping frenzy is upon us, I’ll be uploading new items as often as I can in the next little while. If you like what you see in the shop or in my previously sold items, stick around and check back regularly. Please note: I am totally open to handing out mates’ discounts, so drop me a line if you see something you fancy and I may well be willing to haggle! Enquiries to claire[at]onenightstanzas[dot]com.
Merry Christmas Shopping!

ONS housekeeping…

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

The photo above is a snapshot from my living room right now. I’ve been on overdrive producing statement necklaces for a craft fair I’m exhibiting at next weekend. Most of these beauties are up at the store in the meantime, too, if you see anything you like!

But although my living room is a total mess, ONS is not! I’ll admit, I had kind of let it go to rack and ruin recently, and for that I apologise! The One Night Stanzas Store was still advertising Christmas deals and sold-out pamphlets, and my bio was seriously behind the times! But if you look at the top right-hand corner of One Night Stanzas‘ homepage now, you’ll see it’s all been tidied up a bit.

The One Night Stanzas bookstore is no more. Sorry guys — blame yourselves! You all nagged me for a cheap place to buy poetry books and then no one bought any! However, One Night Stanzas does still have a Store page — you can still grab the Read This Press jewellery and pamphlets by following this link.

“About One Night Stanzas” and “About Claire” have now been merged — they’re just About now. And “Contact” has become Contribute — so if you want to send me something, ask me something, give me feedback or write something for the blog, that’s now your place.

While I’m here I just want to say two more things…

One, I’m sorry for the slow-down in postings over the past little while. My life is becoming increasingly busy, hectic and exciting, with so many projects to work on, events to attend and so on! I’m now teaching at college and Uni, reading a PhD, working the performance poetry circuit, helping to co-ordinate this collection, making jewellery, editing chapbooks, judging poetry contests, working on major poetry commissions and preparing for the return of Read This Magazine in not too long a time… plus trying to find time to write! It’s insane, but fantastic. But it does mean One Night Stanzas has to take a back seat sometimes.

And two? Thanks so much for sticking around, reading, commenting, sending me links, following me on Twitter, inviting me to read at events, sending your books for me to review, recommending stuff and doing everything else that you do. You guys rock.

I’ve been busy again! New stuff up at the Read This Store — remember, it’s Valentine’s Day soon, and I do custom orders! :)

“You Old Soak” by Chris Lindores: now available to buy from Read This Press

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

So, you’ve all been putting up with my twittering on about Skin Deep, basically forever… well, here’s Skin Deep’s sister project (or perhaps I should say dirty old uncle project?). You Old Soak is the very first pamphlet collection of up-and-coming young Scottish poet Chris Lindores, who you may remember, as he was ONS‘ first ever Featured Poet all the way back in September ‘08!

I’ll be writing a proper review of the book in a little while, but for now I’ll let you check out some of his work yourselves. I’ll just say this: Chris’ work is dark, subtle, funny, irreverant, touching and really, really smart. You Old Soak is a full forty pages of pure poetic goodness and I highly recommend it!

Every copy has been lovingly handmade by me. The covers are 200gsm cardstock, and every one has been hand-bleached and decorated to make every pamphlet unique. Staple-bound and printed on high-quality pages, you get a whole lot of pamphlet for your money! Copies are priced at £4/$6 plus p&p. Click the button below, or visit the Etsy store to grab your copy.

Remember, every single copy of Read This, Skin Deep or You Old Soak that you buy contributes towards keeping Read This Press going. Support us, we’re a micropress — and we couldn’t do it without you!

Don’t forget to visit the One Night Stanzas store & The Read This Store!
